Why EV Drivers Look at Octopus

Getting your charger and your energy tariff from the same provider just makes life easier, especially with a popular EV-friendly tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go giving you access to super-cheap overnight charging rates.

By switching to home charging on an EV tariff, Octopus estimates you can save around £820 a year compared to running an average petrol car. You could also cut your charging costs by up to 85% compared to public chargers, and up to 68% compared to standard energy tariffs. Plus, their installation service is highly recommended—in a recent survey of over 4,000 customers, 81% gave them a 9 or 10 out of 10! As always, checking the official Octopus pages for the latest figures and terms is a good idea.

  • Smart charging works best when paired with Intelligent Octopus Go for eligible cars and chargers.
  • A standard installation is included for straightforward installs.
  • Longer cable runs and more involved installs are available if your setup needs more work.
  • Octopus remains one of the best-known names in UK EV tariffs and home charging.

EV Charger FAQ

Here are a few quick things to think about before you order. For all the technical details, compatibility checks, and full FAQs, make sure to read the official Octopus EV charger page.

Home EV charging cable

Tethered or untethered?

Tethered chargers have a cable permanently fixed to the unit. Untethered chargers let you plug your own cable in at both ends—perfect if you want a tidier look or prefer to use the cable that came with your EV.

EV charging driveway setup

Will the cable reach?

Your charging cable needs to comfortably reach from the chargepoint to your car. According to Octopus, tethered chargers typically come with cables between 5 and 8 metres long, which is plenty for most situations where the charger is mounted on an outside wall next to a driveway.

Private parking for EV charger installation

Do you need private parking?

Yes. Octopus requires you to have private parking like a driveway or garage, with no public land separating your house from the charger. If your cable needs to run across public land, you'll generally need a different solution, like Kerbo Charge.

Installation Packages

A standard installation is actually included in the price of your charger. If your setup is a bit more complex—like needing a much longer cable run—Octopus offers a few set packages:

Package Cable Length What's Included Additional Cost
Standard Up to 10m Electrical components and connections, charger mounting, cable clipping and electrical testing £0
Standard Plus Up to 20m Everything in Standard, with a longer cable run £99
Enhanced Up to 30m Everything in Standard, with the longest listed cable run £189
